When The Lost Souls recorded “It Won’t Work Out Baby,” the group’s line up consised of: Eddie Lebron, Gene Serina, Butch Poveromo & Paul Petrucelli. Part of The Lost Souls, originated with The Vels on Amy records. Eddie Lebron & Gene Serina were part of this group. The Vels recorded "Do The Walk" & "In Laws" on Amy Records in 1963. Jerry Landis (better known as Paul Simon of Simon & Garfunkel) produced the group. The Vels would one year later change their name to The Styles (with Eddie Lebron on lineup) and record "I Love You For Sentimental Reasons” b/w “School Bells to Chapel Bells” for Josie Records. (Gene Serina was in the military at the time. Later after, Gene Serina returned to the group.)

Around the same time, the other part of the group: Butch Poveromo & Paul Petrucelli, were in a group called the Gems. The Gems became the Locomotions, who recorded “Little Eva” (a novelty tribute to Little Eva’s hit “ The Locomotion.) “Little Eva” b/w “Adios My Love” was recorded for George Goldners legendary “Gone” records label. Sadly, after the recording, the group dispersed; Paul, Butch, and Jack turned back to their R&B roots, and joined with two original members of The Universals, Fred Miller, & Tony Brooks. This group yielded no releases, but further deepened the skills of the 3 younger vocalists.

Soon after, the 3 were noticed by Joe Webb, who needed a group that could carry out a good R&B sound as opposed to the more common Blue Eyed soul sound. Long story short, Webb had planned to have them record “It Won’t Work Out Baby” to be released on Glasco Records! Shortly after though, Jack Kunz was drafted into the military, leaving Butch Poveromo & Paul Petrucelli alone. Webb still went on arranged a meeting with Butch Poveromo & Paul Petrucelli to record the track with Eddie Lebron and Gene Serina in the basement of The Apollo Theater! This was the groups final formation, and the rest is history!
